Lene Pedersen, Central Washington University professor of anthropology and museum studies, will present “Keeping the Peace: Negotiating Tolerance in Hindu-Muslim relationships in Bali” at Central on Stage at Raw Space, at 7 p.m. on April 17. Raw Space is located on 4th Avenue between Pearl and Pine Streets in Ellensburg. The event is free and open to the public.
This presentation explores the relatively peaceful coexistence between Hindus and Muslims on Bali. Based on fieldwork in eastern Bali, an area with longstanding minority Muslim populations, Pedersen examines the major ways that peaceful coexistence between Hindus and Muslims is experienced and negotiated.
Pedersen has been conducting research in Bali for 15 years. In 2006, she published the book Ritual and World Change in A Balinese Princedom, and is currently working on a three-year project on political change, sponsored by the National Science Foundation.
