ELLENSBURG, Wash. — More that 50 boys and girls youth basketball teams will converge upon Central Washington University this weekend as CWU plays host to the annual Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Spring Fling basketball tournament. Games begin Friday, March 4 and go through Sunday, March 6.
There are nine teams from the Kittitas Valley taking part in the tournament. The rest are coming from across the region and range in age from third through eighth grade.
Games will be played in CWU’s Recreation Center and Nicholson Pavilion. Tickets will be available at the door, with a weekend tournament pass available for purchase Friday only. For a complete schedule of games and ticket prices, visit www.cwu.edu/rec/aau.
The tournament, which is sponsored by CWU’s University Recreation, also provides more than two-dozen Central students an opportunity to get involved in the Ellensburg community.
According to Eric Scott, University Recreation Special Events coordinator, student employees and interns are the ones who organized this tournament and will be working at it throughout the weekend.
“This event gives students practical experience for their future professional careers,” says Scott. “It is also great to see all these teams coming to Ellensburg, giving us an opportunity to showcase our university and facilities.”
With the majority of the teams coming from outside of Kittitas County, that could also mean an added economic benefit to the community, especially if teams choose to stay in local hotels and eat at local restaurants. Some may even do some shopping while they’re taking a break between games.
