U.S. Army Lt. Col. Greg Solem was greeted with cheers, banners, signs, flags and hugs on Friday as he returned to Ellensburg after nearly 18 months of service in Iraq.

A crowd estimated at more than 150 gathered at the small Ellensburg park at Mountain View Avenue and Canyon Road as Solem’s wife, Helen, drove the family van into the crowd waiting to surprise him after his drive from Sea-Tac airport where he returned from the East Coast.

“I had no idea this would happen,” Solem said in a loud voice as he emerged smiling from the van and the crowd surged around him. “I am so humbled. What a blessing.” (READ MORE…)
