The electricity is out this morning as I write. There is an unusual silence. No fans or refrigerator motor humming. The clothes dryer stilled and the coffee no longer hot. Even the birds are quiet.

Karen Spears Zacharias teaches journalism at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, and she wrote this true-crime book, “A Silence of Mockingbirds,” while serving as writer in residence at the Fairhope Center for the Writing Arts in Alabama. Her previous book, “Will Jesus Buy Me a Doublewide (‘Cause I Need More Room for My Plasma TV),” was published by Zondervan in 2012. (READ MORE…)
